Abstract:  Shri Sobha Singh (1901–1986), one of twentieth-century India’s most celebrated painters, is admired for his artistic interpretations of Sikh Gurus, Punjabi folklore, and the fine feelings of human emotion. Among his diverse body of work, the painting “Prem Rachna” (“Creation of Love”) occupies a special place. More than a visual narrative of romantic devotion, it is an intimate reflection of the painter’s own lived experiences of love, longing, and fidelity. This paper examines the painting in relation to Sobha Singh’s biography, analyzing the interplay of personal memory, cultural tradition, and artistic innovation. Drawing on primary accounts, critical scholarship, and stylistic analysis, the study situates “Prem Rachna” within the broader history of Indian art and emphasizes how deeply personal experiences can enhance universal artistic expression.
