Abstract: The representation of women in literature has undergone a significant transformation from the late nineteenth and early twentieth century’s to the present day. The portrayal of women in literature reflects the social, cultural, and ideological frameworks of a particular time. Rabindranath Tagore, a pioneer of modern Indian literature, portrayed women as psychologically complex individuals negotiating the constraints of a patriarchal society. In contrast, contemporary writers have expanded this representation further by exploring themes such as identity, autonomy, resistance, and intersectionality.  It also foregrounding issues such as gender equality, identity, sexuality, class,. . This paper critically examines the delineation of female characters in Tagore’s works and compares them with representations in contemporary literature. It argues that while Tagore laid the foundation for feminist consciousness in Indian writing, contemporary authors have expanded and radicalized these representations to reflect changing socio-cultural realities.
