Effectiveness of child to child approach on knowledge regarding practices of oral hygiene among school age children at selected schools, Bangalore

DOIs:10.2017/IJRCS/202502011     |     Paper ID: IJRCS202502011Healthy and strong teeth are an important part of child health. The Child-to-Child Approach refers to a style of child empowerment where children are active participants in their own development and the development of other children.
The present study is aimed to assess the effectiveness of child to child approach on knowledge regarding practices of oral hygiene among school children at selected schools, Bangalore.
Pretest-post test control group design with experimental approach was adopted in the present study to accomplish the objectives. Samples were selected by using stratified random technique. Samples were 4th& 5th standard students. The sample size was 60 in both control and experimental group. Structured questionnaire was used to collect the data from the samples.
In experimental group the pre test mean knowledge score was found to be 41.8 with mean and SD 15.8±3.154 and the post test mean knowledge score was found to be 77.0percent with mean and SD 8.7±2.921.The enhancement of 35.2 percent was found to be statistically significant (t=18.06, p<0.05).
In control group the pre test mean knowledge score was found to be 45.8with mean and SD 10.3±3.095 and post test mean knowledge score was found to be 48.5percent with mean and SD 10.1±2.825. The enhancement of 2.7 level which was found to be statistically significant (t=1.90, p<0.05).
The post test mean knowledge scores between experimental and control group was found to be 77.0 percent and 48.5 percent respectively with a mean difference of 28.5 percent, was found to be statistically significant at 0.05 level (t=16.5, p<0.05).
The overall findings of the study revealed that there was very highly significant increase in the knowledge of school children on practices of oral hygiene in experimental group than the control group after the child to child teaching programme. So study concluded that children are the better change agents to transfer the information to their peer group.
