Phytochemical screening and anti-bacterial activity of Echinochloa frumentacea (Barnyard millet)

This study aimed to analyse the phytochemical composition and antibacterial activity of barnyard millet. After collection, the millet sample was tray-dried and powdered. Methanol and aqueous extracts were prepared. Preliminary phytochemical screening revealed the presence of alkaloids, amino acids, carbohydrates, cardiac glycosides, flavonoids, terpenoids and tannins in all samples, while fixed oils and fats were absent. The antibacterial activity of the extracts was investigated against Bacillus megaterium, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains using the well-diffusion method. A significant zone of inhibition was observed, with a maximum of 6 ± 0.5 mm against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, respectively. These findings suggest that barnyard millet serves as a valuable source of active compounds for pharmacological investigations.
