Abstract: Pathogenic microorganisms (especially fungi) affecting plant health are the major and chronic to food production and ecosystem stability worldwide. Producers becomes more dependent on agrochemicals as a relatively reliable method of crop protection. However, increasing use of chemical inputs causes several side effects. Biological control is thus being considered as an alternative supplement way of reducing the use of chemicals in agriculture. The major objective of this study was to isolate a potentially useful bacterial antagonist for biocontrol of fungal pathogens. The fungal cell wall is made up of chitin. Chitinases, a group of enzymes capable of degrading chitin directly to low molecular weight products have been shown to be produced by a numbers of microorganisms. Serratia marcescens, a gram negative bacteria classified in the large family of Enterobacteriaceae and soil inhabitants, is an efficient biological degrader of chitin and one of the most extensively studied chitinolytic bacteria. It possesses the ability to produce different chitinolytic enzymes such as chitinases A, B and C. Serratia marcescens was isolated from soil sample. The isolated organism was characterized morphologically and biochemically. The antifungal activity of chitinase were determined with fungal pathogens. The results showed that the enzymes have an antagonistic action on Aspergillus sp., and Fusarium sp., but not on Penicillium sp.,
