Abstract:  The origin of folklore is difficult to trace. One can say that folklore is as old as ‘folk’ itself. It represents culture, life, social aspects of living etc.  Folklore is a significant part of the oral tradition of a society. It is transferred through generations. Folk songs portray the different aspects of life. It occupies a major place in folk literature. The songs in folk literature are simple, mild and most often composed in the local slangs. It has no specific authorship. Their existence is closely depended upon the simplicity itself. Folk songs have been studied in various terms since eighteenth century. This paper analyses the representation of socio-cultural aspects in folk songs, especially the folk songs practiced in the Malabar region of Kerala.
