Abstract: Indian classical music has a rich theoretical tradition preserved through ancient musicological texts. Among these, Sangita Ratnakara composed by Śārṅgadeva during the 13th century holds a unique position as one of the most comprehensive treatises on Indian music. The text systematically discusses various dimensions of music including Svara (musical notes), Shruti (microtones), raga (melodic framework), tala (rhythmic system), compositions, instruments and dance. It served as a connecting link between ancient and medieval traditions and continues to influence the development of Hindustani and Carnatic music.

The present review study examines the relevance of Sangita Ratnakara in the contemporary system of music education. It highlights the importance of integrating traditional musicological knowledge with modern pedagogical approaches. The study explores its implementation in curriculum, performance training, research and cultural preservation. The paper concludes that Sangita Ratnakara remains a valuable source of knowledge for present-day learners and researchers.
